So This is Christmas… and What Have We Done?

I have systematically become more and more disinterested with the Christmas hype throughout the years, and this one has hardly absorbed my attention besides spending time with family, friends and sending a small barrage of messages to my overseas ‘family’ (which is essentially what it should all be about anyway…). So much has happened in the last 12 months that it’s been hard for me to focus on these end of year festivities.

For some, this year has been a crude self-realisation that the white picket fence has cracks, moss, and termites chewing it to pieces. An eye-opener to haul them out of their quaint little comfort zone. An unpleasant hike through the bureaucratic forest in order to have a piece of property to call their own. But, all of these negative irritations aside, 2007 is a year of completion – cycles come to a close, relationships are consolidated or broken, stale habits are recycled into ‘affirmative actions’, one way or another goals are achieved that will clear the path for a new beginning next year, whatever it may imply for each one of us.

I have sensed this change for a while now, both within myself and within most of my friends. Everyone I know well can look back and be proud of at least one thing they have achieved for themselves this year, whether they appreciate it or not (those of you I’m just getting to know, well… you’ll have your stories too). In our little worlds, we have bought new homes, had babies, cut metaphoric umbilical cords, become stronger in our resolve to stand by our values, delved deeper into the treasure trunk of who we are, decided what the next brush strokes will be in our respective big pictures.

So here’s to all of you – the trials and tribulations, tests and trip-ups you’ve gone through to be where you are now. Hold your heads up high for what you’ve accomplished, and what you can now look forward to. And if you choose to look at things negatively, expect to get an earful from me…

Bring on 2008.

Here’s To YouJust Jinjer

please don’t be fooled
cuz it’s not over yet
there is still time
and some things left unsaid

but stand proud
stand tall
look ’round, you’ve done the impossible
and here’s to you!
you’ve found yourself
and it’s about time

unspoken words
lead to our words of time
time is what stands
in the way of what was

but stand proud
stand tall
look ’round, you’ve done the impossible
and here’s to you!
you’ve found yourself

everyone knows
that you won’t
be told no
anymore

let it be known
that the test has begun
people have died
and their lives left unsung

but stand proud
stand tall
look ’round, you’ve done the impossible
and here’s to you!
you’ve found yourself
and it’s about time
